The JCA has worked to develop new audiences for Jazz through education and access. The JCA partners with the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild to provide unprecedented jazz education for aspiring young musicians in the Richmond metropolitan area. Through weekly ensemble and sectional lessons, youth ages 9 to 18 are mentored by professional composers and musicians of the JCA. This sharing of knowledge and skill dates back to the dawn of recorded history: nothing is more fundamental to the growth of our society. Jazz is no exception, and for decades "apprenticeship" was the rule for anyone wanting to play in a band. The JCA is bringing "apprenticeship" back to raise the next crop of young jazz musicians and to pass this great American music on to the next generation. |

Concert featuring national artist "Trombone Shorty". The concert will be held at Gottwald Playhouse at CenterStage on February 23, 2010 at 8:00 pm. At 23, "Trombone Shorty", a New Orleans native, has played alongside seasoned musicians like Wynton Marsalis and traveled all over the world. He is giving old school Jazz a new cool with hi high energy and raucous "New Orleans" style. The proceeds benefit the Jazz Mentor's Project, which is an educational outreach program that provides unprecedented access for under served and underprivileged youth to high quality music education through apprenticeship. Funds raised will provide full and partial scholarships for lessons, master classes with national musicians, and a computer lab that will link to an online music curriculum designed by the Berklee College of Music. Please support our efforts in passing the torch of Jazz to Richmond's next generation! Tickets are $25 general admission $15 student (18 and under or college ID) and are sold at Richmond CenterStage Box Office. |
